Chaitén Eruption Continues
Updated 08-24-08 03:16:59pm by Indy

Update: August 24th
As of today there is nothing new to report on the eruption. All indications are that the eruption continues at a low level.

Update: August 14th
The eruption chemistry has changed and now poses a greater risk to the climate. How long will this eruption continue?

Update: August 8th
According to web cam images from today the eruption of Chaitén continues. The eruption is now over three months old.

Update: August 1st

"Weather is cloudy at the volcano, but the cloud base was high enough for viewing when the big eruption began soon after dawn. The webcam showed a huge widening of the plume base — the whole dome-top blowing away — then an immense darkness, then the paler ashfall running coastward. The camera may not survive long, if this is as big an event as I suspect. Winds have shifted to W at upper levels, but NE near the surface, so at least some of the plume is coming over the camera location."

Update: July 28th

"Although surface manifestations of eruption have continued to decline, the seismicity indicates significant movement of magma, and official concern is high. Another major eruption appears to be imminent, and it could be at least as large as the early May event — or larger still."

Fresh Bilge - Chaiten Update #40 (Read The Full Report)

About Chaiten:

Since the beginning of May 2008 the Chaitén volcano has been erupting nonstop. Prior to that it is estimated that the volcano had been dormant for some 8,000 or 9,000 years. The potential exists for a very large magma chamber below the volcano. Pre eruption quakes may indicate a magma chamber capable of supporting an eruption on the scale of Mount Tambora.

With the eruption alive and well after 6 weeks and unprecedented dome building I find it important to keep this story featured on our home page until the eruption has ended and the all clear has been given.

Why? Because an eruption on the scale of Mount Tambora has the ability to seriously alter our climate and since the U.S. media isn't giving this story a minute of coverage I felt it important to keep everyone informed.

All the credit in the world goes to the Fresh Bilge blog for continuous coverage of this event.
